Detailed Summary

The episode opens with a shot of a young man, Scott Carey, in a therapy session. He tells his therapist about his headaches and his discovery of his abilities: when he touches something, that thing is electrocuted. His therapist asks him how he knows this and Scott says that he did it to the neighbor's cat because the Yellow-Eyed Man told him to, and tells him he must do other awful, terrible things. He says that the Yellow-Eyed Man has plans for him and looks down, worried, when the therapist asks him what kind of plans.
Cut to Scott leaving after his session, walking to his car in the dark, along a veritably deserted area. He gets to his car, but sees the reflection of a man in his car windows. He turns and is stabbed in the chest, the man hitching the knife up before pulling it out and letting Scott fall to the ground.

Sam and Dean are standing by the river where we left them at the end of Croatoan, drinking some beers, and Dean tells Sam what John said to him just before he died; that if Dean couldn't save Sam, he would have to kill him. Sam is furious with Dean for keeping this from him and wants to go find out more, but Dean begs him to give him some time to try to think and to figure everything out.

Later that night we see Sam at the motel. He has his backpack and he approaches a car, looking all around before using a wire to unlock the door and steal the car. In the next shot we see him with a piece of paper in his hand, on which is written an address. Sam approaches what appears to be a shack and peers inside, scoping out the place. He goes around back and picks the lock, carefully entering the house. He takes a few steps forward and walks right into a trip wire, realizing too late that the house is booby trapped. An explosion rips through the house, destroying Sam. And then the scene shifts and changes and we see a young woman sit up in bed, sweating, terrified, obviously having just had a nightmare. Her boyfriend wakes up and asks if she's alright, and she dismisses it as just another bad dream.

Except for Sam's leaving, all of the previous scene was part of the girl's dream, and we see Sam walk into Ellen Harvelle's bar. Ellen isn't surprised to see him and tells Sam that Dean's been calling, looking for him. She asks what's wrong and Sam lowers his head, but doesn't answer, insteading asking about Jo. Ellen says that Jo has left because she wanted to keep hunting and Sam nods, knowing it's his and Dean's fault. Ellen acknowledges that she could blame the boys, but that she doesn't, and that she forgave John years ago for what happened to her own husband. Sam asks what happened and this time it's Ellen who avoids the question, instead asking Sam why he's come. Sam says he needs help and in the next scene, he talks to Ash, telling him he wants to find other people like him, people with abilities similar to his. Ash comes out minutes later with a short list of only four people who had nursery fires, one of whom is Sam; Sam knows Andrew Gallagher, and the other two, Max Miller and Scott Carey, are both dead. Ash tells Sam how Scott died and where he's buried and Sam decides to go check it out. Ellen asks where he's going and tells him that she has to tell Dean where he's going. Sam begs her not to and then leaves the bar.

Sam goes to the home of Scott Carey and talks to his father, posing as a high school friend. Scott's father tells Sam about Scott's headaches and his nightmares, but he never knew what they were about. Sam asks to see Scott's room and Scott's father lets him in. Sam looks around the room, seeing nothing out of the ordinary. He sees bottles of pills on Scott's night table and takes one so he has the doctor's name. He opens Scott's closet and sees a collage of pictures of yellow eyes, hidden behind his clothes.

After leaving Scott's house Sam goes to his motel and is opening his door when he senses somebody behind him. He whirls around and grabs a girl, shoving her into the wall and demanding to know who she is. We see it's the same girl who had the nightmare earlier in the episode and she tells Sam that he's in danger. Sam brings her into his room and Sam asks her for her name, and then asks her to explain about the dreams she's been having. Ava tells Sam that she had a dream about a guy getting stabbed in a parking lot, and then a couple days later she saw the article in the paper about Scott Carey: he was the guy in her dream. Then she tells Sam that she had a dream about Sam and that she saw him die. Sam asks how she found him and she tells him that she Googled the motel that was on the stationery he had in his hand, and she just wanted to warn him. Sam tells her that he has visions too and asks if her mother died in a housefire. Ava says her mother is alive and lives in Palm Beach and Sam realizes that she doesn't fit the pattern either.

Cut from Sam and Ava we see Dean driving, and his phone rings. He answers; it's Ellen. He asks if she's seen Sam and she tells him that Sam asked her not to tell him where he was. Dean is irritated and tells her that he swore he'd protect Sam. Ellen knows that he must protect his brother and so she tells him where Sam went. Dean thanks her and hangs up.

Back in Sam's motel room, Ava is trying to get Sam to leave town before he gets blown up, but Sam's not having any of it. Sam tells her that he can't leave because there's something going on and he has to find out what it is. Ava gives up, saying that she needs to get back home and back to her life. Sam tells her that if she leaves, she may never find out the truth about who she is. Ava turns back to Sam and in the next shot we see her talking to Dr. Waxler, Scott Carey's therapist. She's distracting him so that Sam can go in and steal Scott's confidential file. Back at the motel they listen to the tape of Scott's last session, where he told Dr. Waxler about his abilites.
Meanwhile, in the parking lot, Dean drives up and sees Sam standing in the window of his motel room and is relieved that he's okay. Then Sam moves and Dean sees Ava and he grins, thinking Sam's picked up a girl.
Back in the motel room Sam hears what Scott said about the Yellow-Eyed Man and about the coming war. Ava asks him what he's talking about and before Sam can answer a bullet pierces the glass behind him, narrowly missing his head. Sam pushes Ava to the floor, protecting her, and we see Gordon Walker, the crazy vampire killer, on the roof across from Sam's building with a rifle, shooting into Sam's room. Sam and Ava hide and Gordon watches through his scope, looking for another clear shot of Sam. He almost has it when Dean appears and kicks him in the head, straddling him and punching him the face, telling him that if he shoots his brother, he'll kill him. Gordon asks Dean to wait but Dean doesn't stop until Gordon picks up his gun and whacks Dean across the face, knocking him to the ground. He hits him again and knocks him unconscious.

Sam and Ava go up on the roof where Gordon and Dean were and Sam finds the shells from Gordon's rifle. Ava's freaked out that he knows a lot about the shells and Sam says he watches too much TV. Sam calls Dean and Dean answers. As the camera pans out, we see Gordon has tied Dean to a chair and is holding the phone to his ear. Dean talks to Sam and gives him the address of the building he's in. Sam hangs up and writes down the address, telling Ava that Dean's in trouble. She asks him how he knows and Sam says that Dean gave him a code word to let him know that he's in trouble. Sam tries to explain but gives up and he and Ava leave the roof.

Dean and Gordon talk; Dean thinks this is revenge for leaving Gordon tied up in "Fresh Blood", about which he is still amused. But Gordon tells him that's not why he's doing this. He tells Dean that he's hunting Sam.

Sam is walking Ava to her car, and she's reluctant to leave, worried about Sam. He tells her to go home and she asks him to promise her that he'll call when he gets Dean, just so she knows he's okay.

Meanwhile Gordon tells Dean about why he's hunting Sam; says he heard that Sam would be a soldier in the coming war and would fight against the side of humans. Gordon says that he knows all about Sam's visions and Dean is skeptical about what he knows, but Gordon says he has his own "roadhouse connections". Gordon tells Dean that he killed Scott Carey and that all of the special children have to be taken out. Gordon tells Dean that he'll booby trap the house, knowing that Sam will come in through the back door once he sees Gordon at the front door. Knowing that Sam won't fall for the first trip wire, he shows Dean that he'll set up a second one, just to be sure.
We see Gordon setting up his trip wires in preparation for Sam's arrival and then he comes back to sit next to Dean. He tells Dean about what he thinks Sam will become and why he has to kill him. Dean objects, telling him that he knows Sam, he knows he would never become what Gordon says he will. Gordon admits that Dean is blinded by his love for his brother but that John would've had the guts to do what he had to do, even if it meant killing Sam. Gordon gags Dean and leaves him in the chair to await Sam's arrival.
Outside we see Sam, looking at the address in his hand, just like in Ava's dream. He approaches the house and looks through the window, seeing Dean gagged and bound to the chair. He runs around the back of the house and picks the lock. Gordon and Dean hear him, and Gordon looks towards the back of the house. Sam comes inside and Dean is panicked. The first wire is tripped and an explosion rocks the building; Dean is angry and afraid but Gordon tells him to wait and see. After a few seconds, the second wire is tripped and Dean is panicked, terrified that Sam is dead.
Gordon walks to the back of the house, rifle ready, and sees Sam's shoe on the floor, smoke pouring out of it. He grins, thinking he's gotten him, and turns, only to hear the sound of a hammer being cocked and the feeling of a gun placed at his head. Sam stands there and tells Gordon to drop the gun. Dean hears him and is hopeful. Gordon lays his gun down and then knocks Sam's gun from his hand and they fight. Gordon has Sam on the ground, beaten and bloody, and prepares to stab him when Sam grabs him and flips him, picking up his rifle and aiming it at Gordon. Gordon dares him to shoot him and Sam hesitates, then bashes Gordon's head with the butt of the rifle, knocking Gordon out. Sam goes to where Dean's tied to the chair and unties his arms and feet. Dean throws off his gag and gets to his feet, holding Sam up to get a look at him. He starts to go after Gordon and Sam tells him not to, that Gordon's taken care of. He and Dean leave the house, only to have Gordon come after them, shooting at them as they run from the house. The boys duck behind a ridge and Sam tells Dean to trust him on this one. As Gordon enters the road, still shooting, cop cars suddenly arrive and Gordon is arrested. Sam has called in an anonymous tip and the cops have come to take Gordon away.

Later, Dean calls the roadhouse, thinking Ellen, Ash, or Jo has told somebody about Sam. Ellen swears that none of them told and tells Dean that any one of the hunters in the roadhouse could've been behind it.

In the car, Sam is trying to call Ava to see if she's alright. He and Dean talk about what happened, and Dean says that he wants to quit, that he's tired of the job. Sam tells him it's what he was meant to do and Dean disagrees, saying he doesn't believe in destiny. Sam says that he's not gonna quit hunting and that if Dean really wants to protect him, he'll just have to come along. We have our usual "Bitch. Jerk." exchange and then Sam tries to call Ava again, clearly worried about her. He asks Dean how far it is to Peoria.
Sam and Dean arrive at Ava's house and go inside, silently looking around. They enter the master bedroom and see Ava's fiance dead in his bed, blood everywhere. Dean goes over to the window and finds sulfur on the windowsill. Sam steps on something and looks down, only to find Ava's engagement ring in a pool of blood but no sign of Ava herself. Sam holds the ring up and says Ava's name, clearly afraid for her.
